ABOUT JACK CURTIS DUBOWSKY

Jack Curtis Dubowsky

Jack Curtis Dubowsky has worked for two decades in the music, film, and recording industries. He has a BA in Communication from UCLA and a Master of Music degree in Composition from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He has scored three independent feature films and has composed music for television and advertising, as well as for public performance. He has worked in Los Angeles, New York City, and San Francisco.

While at UCLA, Jack interned at Chrysalis Records' publishing division. In the mid-1980s, he began working at recording studios in Los Angeles. He assisted on projects from Leonard Cohen, Paul Chihara, and Eliot Goldenthal (Aliens III) to Kiss and Megadeth, with producers from Bob Ezrin to Van Dyke Parks! In 1989, Jack released an obscure solo album and founded De Stijl Music as a publishing company and (for a brief time) record label.

Jack worked as a tech or recording engineer at many studios in the Bay Area and New York City, including the Plant, Hyde Street, Brilliant, American Zoetrope, Sound One, and Chung King Studios. Jack engineered or produced albums for independent labels such as Rounder, Emperor Norton, and Pervertidora.

Jack has worked in the editorial department at Pixar Animation Studios as assistant music editor and as temp sound effect editor. Jack has screen credits on Toy Story 2 and Monsters, Inc.

Jack has conducted music for film projects and for the Alameda Civic Light Opera, where he won awards for best orchestra and best music direction in 2004. His arranging clients include Atlantic Records and Academy Award winning documentarians Ron Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman.

Jack's compositions include three chamber operas. His music has been performed by the San Francisco Choral Artists, the Lesbian/Gay Chorus of San Francisco, the Snopea Chamber Ensemble, the Organic Sound Experiment, and many others. He has received grants from Meet the Composer, Inc. (1998), the Zellerbach Family Fund (1997), the Friends of the San Francisco Public Libarary (1997), and a "Special Recognition of a Score" jury award from the Fire Island Gay and Lesbian Film Festival (2002).

Jack is a Masters graduate of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he received honors in orchestration. Jack also attended the Aspen School of Music. He has studied conducting with Sonja Neblett, and composition with David Conte, Conrad Susa, Elinor Armer, and Michael Czajkowski.
