Knowing the Score: Music in Film

Music has historically served many purposes in film: to cover projector noise, to help light and shadow compete against live vaudeville and burlesque shows, and to elevate a novelty technology above the penny arcade. While music in film still operates in many similar ways--covering poor production sound, smoothing rough transitions, ameliorating poor acting, reinforcing cinematic structure--its power lies in its ability to impart emotional or subplot information, and create illusions of time and place. Learn about the rich history and varied approaches of music in film. Watch and analyze clips in class.

Jack Curtis Dubowsky has scored three independent features, numerous shorts, and has composed music for television and advertising. He has worked in music, film, and postproduction in Los Angeles, New York City, and San Francisco, and has screen credit on two Pixar features. He has received grants from Meet the Composer and the Zellerbach Family Fund.

Victorian Secrets evoke the untold passions and lusts of a more innocent time, where whispers of longing were spoken only in metaphors and outward chastity hid inner desire. On the fourth Friday of each summer month, Senator and Mrs. Horace Chamberlain host grand soirees in their magnificent mansion on Alamo Square. Mrs. Chamberlain has acquired a reputation of receiving gentlemen in her rooms while the Senator is in the Nation's capital. Speculation as to which gentleman Mrs. Chamberlain will entertain draws guests as much as the world-class musicians set to perform. Mrs. Chamberlain never fails to charm.

That Man: Peter Berlin, a feature documentary by acclaimed novelist and director Jim Tushinski, and producer Lawrence Helman (Sex Is), tells the story of living legend, photographer, filmmaker, and icon Peter Berlin.

The film features celebrity interviews with Armistead Maupin, John Waters, and many more.
