Music and sound contribute, along with the visual image, to the distinctive mood and feeling of a film narrative. Students in this course investigate the importance of music and sound to movies, including the use of scores, songs, musical motives, ambient sound, as well as diegetic and nondiegetic sound. Class discussions include the relationship between a director and a composer, how soundtracks add a psychological element to a film, and how the use of foley enhances a sense of fantasy or realism. This course is for cinephiles and anyone interested in the dynamics of audio and visual arts.

Love takes its usual beating when the Lesbian/Gay Chorus of San Francisco presents its annual anti-Valentine's Day cabaret, "Love Bites the Hand That Feeds It."

LGCSF is proud to showcase the world premiere of "Your New Stupid Boyfriend," written by Bay Area composer Jack Curtis Dubowsky.

Emceed by its own "Soprano with a Whip" Carolyn Eidson, the chorus performs selections that run the gamut, from the 70-year-old Broadway tune "Down With Love" to Tom Lehrer's catchy ditty "I Got It From Agnes" to the "Neighbors' Chorus" from the comic opera La Jolie Parfumeuse.

Under the direction of Stephanie Lynne Smith and featuring original "choralography" by Kirk Johnson, "Love Bites" is a unique experience, where depravity and fun go hand in hand.

Theatre Rhino is reachable by BART (16th and Mission station), Muni underground and surface lines 14, 22, and 33. Street parking is available on South Van Ness between 14th and 16th Streets, and there is a parking garage on 16th Street between Mission and Valencia.

TLA Releasing Acquires Rock Haven

Rock Haven
TLA Releasing has acquired worldwide distribution rights to ROCK HAVEN (USA, 2007) a film that marks the feature length, directorial debut of journalist and screenwriter David Lewis, who had previously written the screenplay for TLA Releasing¼s popular home video title, Under One Roof. ROCK HAVEN will play the film festival circuit before its release on home video at the end of 2007. TLA acquired directly from filmmaker David Lewis; TLA Releasing was represented by TLA partner and Director of Acquisitions Richard A. Wolff. The deal was finalized at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival.

ROCK HAVEN will feature an original score by Jack Curtis Dubowsky.

ROCK HAVEN tells the story about Brady (newcomer Sean Hoagland), a young, spiritual man who moves to the coastal seaside town of Rock Haven with his overprotective mother Marty (Laura Jane Coles), who is setting up a Christian school nearby. When Brady meets worldly, seductive Clifford (Owen Alabado) there is an instant attraction to each other, even though homosexuality conflicts with Brady's devoutly Christian beliefs. Filmmaker Lewis says, "With America more politically polarized than ever, I wanted to tell a story about a young gay man who finds solace not by abandoning his religious beliefs, but by finding a higher spiritual ground in which to practice his beliefs. ROCK HAVEN is not just a sensual story about a young man who discovers the joy of first love; it is also a spiritual meditation on the transformative power of faith."

About his collaboration with TLA, David Lewis also said, "I couldn't be more delighted that TLA Releasing has acquired the worldwide distribution rights to ROCK HAVEN. Above all, the company has a passion for film, and it will make sure this movie finds its audience. ROCK HAVEN could not be in better hands."

David Lewis' previous screenplay, Under One Roof (USA, 2002), tells the comedic and touching story about a gay Chinese-American juggling a healthy, sexual dating life and his relationship with his traditional Chinese mother. The film played over 40 film festival around the world, including the Mill Valley Film Festival and the Philadelphia International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, and was released on home video by TLA Releasing in 2003.
