- While jazz, show tunes, and contemporary music may lend themselves more readily to splashy, choreographed numbers, don't expect the Lesbian/Gay Chorus to leave its trademarked theatricality and zaniness at the door for its upcoming Classical concert, "LGCSF Eats Out." Just because they are performing classical music, this does not mean that the Chorus will be standing still. Rather, LGCSF will bring the energy, creativity, and humor behind their recent cabarets and staged shows to a whole new genre.

We are performing with Amar Chaudhary, a longtime composer and performer specializing in contemporary and electronic music, as well as a developer of advanced software for sound synthesis and music composition. Amar studied composition first with Ruth Schonthal at the Westchester Conservatory of Music in New York from 1983 to 1991, and then at Yale University from 1991 to 1995. Amar had his music performed internationally and has received several honors for his musical work, including a 1992 premier of his clarinet quartet Conversational Impromptu at Weill Recital Hall in New York and the 1990 NGCSA Young Composers Award for Earth Songs. Amar received his PhD in Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley in 2001. While at Berkeley, Amar was a researcher at the Center for New Music and Audio Technologies (CNMAT) and developed advanced software for music composition and performance, including Open Sound Edit, an advanced 3D graphical editor for sound representations and Open Sound World, a programming environment for real-time music and audio applications. He has published several research papers related to these and other projects. Amar remains actively involved in local electronic and experimental music in the San Francisco Bay Area, and performs regularly. His recent music involves experimentation with new sounds and sound-synthesis/processing techniques and new modes of musically expressive performance. He is also interested in the use of folk instruments and toy instruments in electro-acoustic music. In addition to his musical work, Amar maintains a deep interest in modern and contemporary art in several media as a creator, consumer and supporter.

| Sunday, October 5, 2008, the Castro Valley Chamber Orchestra will premiere a
new, half-hour, major work by Jack Curtis Dubowsky, conducted by Josh Cohen,
and featuring NBC11 reporter Scott Budman as orator. Eisenhower Farewell
Address, like Aaron Copland's Lincoln Portrait, uses a speaker in conjunction
with live orchestra. The text is excerpted from one of the most renown
Presidential speeches in US history.

Dwight David Eisenhower, Five-Star General and Supreme Commander of the
Allied Forces in Europe, resigned his Army commission in order to become thirty-
fourth President of the United States. Eisenhower served two terms as
President, and delivered a televised Farewell Address on January 17, 1961 from
the Oval Office.

In his speech, Eisenhower warned the country of a growing danger he called the
''military industrial complex.'' This was the first use of the term to describe the
iron triangle of the military, the government, and the defense industry. The
speech is remarkable for its prescience and its relevance today. Although many
feared the ''red menace,'' Eisenhower was keenly aware that changes in society
had established a permanent arms industry at home, and he called for an alert
and responsible citizenry to be wary of it so as to ensure worldwide security and
liberty.

Eisenhower Farewell Address marks the second collaboration of this composer
and orchestra. The Castro Valley Chamber Orchestra, with the Mount Eden
Chorus, premiered Dubowsky's Quaker Peace Testimony December 19, 2007 at
All Saints Church in Hayward.

The concert will be held at the Castro Valley Center for the Arts, 19501 Redwood
Road, in Castro Valley. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students and seniors,
and children 12 and under are admitted free of charge. Also on the program is
Mozart's ''Jupiter'' Symphony #41. |
